MTV GLOBALLY HONOURS THE MOST PLAYED MUSIC VIDEOS IN FIRST HALF OF 2008

BRITISH STAR LEONA LEWIS’ ‘BLEEDING LOVE’ IS CROWNED MOST PLAYED VIDEO ACROSS MTV CHANNELS GLOBALLY

VIDEO GOES DOUBLE PLATINUM FOR THE FIRST TIME

138% INCREASE IN TOTAL NUMBER OF PLAYS

London, 8th December, 2008: MTV International (MTVNI) today unveiled the recipients of the twice annual Platinum And Gold Video Play Awards for the first half of 2008, revealing a substantial increase in the Network’s music output.

In total, the top 37 videos received a combined 336,478 plays across MTV’s international network (excluding all MTV USA channels) in 180 days. Eight of the Platinum Award winners received over 11,000 plays, with Leona Lewis’ ‘Bleeding Love’ topping the bill with an incredible 16,085 plays, and for the first time ever, a double Platinum Award*. Rhianna’s ‘Don’t Stop The Music’ received 15,953 plays.

Madonna makes the list for the first time with her first new video since the awards were conceived in 2007. ‘4 Minutes’ racked up over 15,000 plays in the first half of 2008, despite the video only being serviced to MTV in April. At 5,000 spins a month, Madonna’s ‘4 minutes’, which features Timbaland and Justin Timberlake was the most heavily spun record in the April to June period.

The total amount of plays represents a 138% increase year on year, with a 75% increase in the number of Platinum Awards, and a 150% increase in the number of Gold Awards. With an average of over 54 million viewers across the globe tuning in at least once a month to watch music videos, the results not only indicate a substantial increase in the musical output across the MTV Networks, but also MTV’s commitment to supporting music on a global level.

Together with the top spot for ‘Bleeding Love’, Leona Lewis also received a Platinum Award for ‘Better In Time’; Timbaland received Platinum Awards for three of his collaborations; whilst Britney Spears, One Republic and Rhianna all appeared twice in the list.

Bruce Gilmer, Senior Vice President Music, Talent & Music, MTV Networks International commented: “MTV is the original home of music videos, and these Awards recognise the videos that have been played the most and have proved the most popular with audiences.”

Dan Waite, MTV Talent and Music Director commented: “This, once again, demonstrates MTV’s commitment to new artists and new music. I am delighted that next to the Madonna’s and the Britney’s of this world we find Leona Lewis, Duffy, Flo Rida, Adele, Sara Baraeillis, Yael Naim and Colbie Caillat all being honoured in this most meaningful of ways - by huge amounts of airtime.”

The innovative awards were launched in 2007, to celebrate the most played music videos across the global MTV network. To create the awards, 53 MTV Music Channels from four continents provided data on their most played Music Videos from the period 1 January – 30 June 2008. Those played over 4,000 times received a Gold Award, those played over 8,000 times received a Platinum Award, whilst 16,000 plays resulted in a Platinum Award.
