When Pop Idol launched in 2001, it paved the way for ordinary (and extraordinary) members of the British and American public to realise their dreams of becoming bona fide pop stars.
Gareth Gates and Will Young battled it out on live television back in 2001 to be named the first winner of Pop Idol and the world of music and reality TV hasn’t been quite the same since. Many of the winners have gone on to continually top the charts with some of the best pop tunes of the noughties, whilst other have crashed and burned before their second single could hit the shops.
